The Good Test

I know. You’re probably thinking, “a ‘good test’?!” But this isn’t just a good test — it’s the good test. In fact, this is the best test you could ever take. I promise.

So, do you think you’re a good person? Maybe you’ve given money to help starving children, helped elderly ladies cross a street, or been kind to your little brother. But let’s put you to the test — standards of goodness that are taken from the Ten Commandments — and see how you do.

Have you ever told a lie? Even a small white lie or half-truth? Yep, those count. And, if you tell a lie, what does that make you? The uncomfortable but correct answer is liar. (Ouch.)

Have you ever stolen anything? Even something small? (Think back to preschool when you just had to have that cool toy the other kid was holding.) What would that make you? Yep. A thief.

Have you ever dishonored your parents? That means, have you ever disobeyed them, been disrespectful to them, or said anything disrespectful about them? And have you always had a good attitude toward them?  (Yeah, this one got me, too.)

Have you always put God first in your life? He’s the one who gave you life and keeps you alive right now. Have you always loved Him and made Him the most important thing in your life?

You’ve probably broken at least one of those standards — if you’re honest, you’ve broken all of them. And those were just four of the Ten Commandments.

If God judges you by these commandments, would you be innocent or guilty?

And, based on your innocence or guilt, would you deserve to go to Heaven or Hell?

Maybe you’re like me. I failed this test. I knew that I was guilty of breaking God’s standards, and that I deserved to go to Hell.

But that’s not the end of the test. God’s Son, Jesus, passed this test. He came to earth and lived a perfect life, and took the punishment we deserved for breaking God’s laws. Because I’ve believed on Him and turned from my sin, I am now right with God. In His eyes, I passed the test.
